Car rental insurance and deposit in Albania
What the deposit is, what each level of insurance pays for, and how to pick up and return a car without a dispute over damage.
What you can be asked to pay
-
Security deposit
A refundable amount the rental company takes when you pick up the car and gives back when you return it in the same condition. It is paid in person, never online, and each car page shows how much it is.
-
Insurance
Every rental includes third-party cover. Partial or full insurance is an extra, charged per day, that limits what you pay if the rental car is damaged. You choose it when you book. Some rental companies also offer theft protection as a separate extra.
-
Your share of damage
What you pay if the rental car is damaged: nothing for covered damage with full insurance, 20% with partial insurance, and the whole cost with third-party cover only.
Insurance levels compared
Each rental company chooses which levels it offers and at what price. The car page and checkout show them.

What no insurance covers
Breaking the rental agreement cancels the cover, and the damage is then charged in full: driving after drinking, speeding, letting someone not named in the contract drive, crossing a border without permission, or driving where the agreement does not allow it, such as unpaved tracks.
What the insurance can cover
Full and partial insurance cover the same list of items, chosen by each rental company. The car page shows its list before you book.
-
Third party cover
Included in every rentalCovers damage or injury you cause to other people, their vehicle, or their property. It does not cover damage to the rental car you are driving. If the other party is at fault, their insurance covers the damage. A police report is required.
-
Accidents
Covers damage to the rental car caused by a road accident or collision. Important: for accidental damage, a police report is often required. If the police do not come, you should be able to show that you made every possible effort to call them. After any accident, take clear photos of the damage and the full scene (car position, road signs, plates), and send them to the rental company.
-
Natural disasters
Covers damage caused by natural events such as hail, flooding, storm, falling branches, or similar weather incidents.
-
Parking Damages
Covers damage that happens while the car is parked, such as dents or scratches, including cases where the other party is unknown. If available, take photos and try to obtain proof (nearby cameras, witnesses, parking ticket, or any useful detail).
-
Window / Mirrors
Often not coveredCovers broken or cracked windows and damage to mirrors, such as windshield, side windows, rear window, and side mirrors.
-
Tyres
Often not coveredCovers tyre damage such as puncture or blowout. Wheel or rim damage is not included.
-
Theft
Covers theft of the vehicle or attempted theft that causes damage. A police report is typically required, and you may be asked to provide supporting documents (for example key return confirmation and incident details).
-
Underbody
Often not coveredCovers damage to the underside of the vehicle, such as the oil pan, exhaust, suspension parts, or underbody panels.
-
Roadside assistance
Provides help in case of breakdown or immobilization, such as towing, on site repair when possible, battery jump start, or lock out support. If the car cannot continue, a replacement vehicle may be provided when available and when required by the assistance service.
Damage to tyres, glass and the underside of the car is common on rough roads, and these items are often left out of the cover. Check them on the car page before you book.

If the car is damaged
After an accident or other damage
After an accident, make the scene safe, then call the police and the rental company. Insurance usually needs a police report, so ask for one even for minor damage.
For a puncture, a cracked windscreen or a scratch found in a car park, take photos straight away and tell the rental company before anything is repaired.
What to do after an accidentIf you disagree with a charge
Damage and the deposit are settled between you and the rental company under your rental contract, and your photos and the signed handover form are what count. Cria support can help you reach the rental company.

Not always. Each rental company sets the deposit for each car and takes it at pickup, and the car page shows the deposit and the ways the rental company accepts payment. Many cars on Cria ask for no deposit at all, and you can filter the car list to cars without one.
Third-party cover is required by law and included in every rental. Partial and full insurance are optional, unless the rental company includes full insurance in every rental of that car; it is then already in the price you see.
Both cover the same items, chosen by the rental company. Partial insurance pays 80% of the cost of covered damage and you pay the remaining 20%. Full insurance pays all of it, provided you keep to the rental agreement.
Some do. Check that your policy covers rental cars in Albania and which damage it pays for. The rental company still takes its deposit and charges damage under its own contract, so you would usually pay it first and claim the money back from your insurer.
When you return the car in the condition you received it, the rental company gives the deposit back or releases the hold on your card. A released card hold can take a few days to disappear, depending on your bank. Ask at pickup how and when it is returned.
Only if the rental company includes them in its cover, and many leave out tyres, windows and mirrors, and the underbody. The car page lists what its insurance covers before you book.
Often not. Many rental agreements do not allow driving on unpaved tracks, and damage caused while breaking the agreement is charged in full, whatever insurance you have. The main roads to Theth, Valbona and over the Llogara Pass are paved.
No. Some cars have a no-show fee, paid online with the booking. It is refunded 24 hours after you return the car, unless a no-show or damage is recorded in that time. It is also kept if you cancel after the free-cancellation deadline. The deposit is separate and paid to the rental company at pickup.
