Money tips for Albania

  • The official currency is the Albanian lek (ALL). Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas, but at a worse rate.
  • ATMs are available in all cities. Withdraw in lek for the best exchange rate.
  • Most restaurants and shops in cities accept credit and debit cards. Carry cash in rural areas.
  • Tipping is not compulsory but is appreciated. Round up the bill or leave 5–10% for good service.
  • Exchange offices (bureaux de change) in Tirana offer better rates than those at airports or hotels.
  • Albania is not part of the EU's Roam Like at Home area, so an EU SIM card pays roaming charges here. Many EU operators cap data at €14 per GB under a voluntary agreement, but a local SIM card is far cheaper for data.

Albanian lek: questions travellers ask

Albania uses the Albanian lek (ALL), shown as L or Lekë on price tags. Albania is not in the eurozone, so the lek is the only official currency. Banknotes go up to 10,000 lek, and small amounts are paid in coins.

1 euro is about 90.77 lek at the latest mid-market rate. Banks and exchange offices take a margin, so you will get a little less. The converter above also covers pounds, dollars, złoty, francs and other currencies.

Many Albanians still count in old lek (lekë të vjetra), which add a zero: 1,000 old lek is 100 lek. If a spoken price sounds too high, ask whether it is in old or new lek. Printed prices and receipts are in new lek.

Choose lek. When a card terminal or ATM offers to charge you in euros, pounds or your home currency, it uses its own exchange rate, which is usually worse than your bank's.

Often at hotels, tourist restaurants and along the coast, but change comes back in lek at a rounded rate. Fuel stations, supermarkets, parking and small shops expect lek, so keep some lek with you when you drive.

Most ATMs charge a fee on foreign cards, and the amount differs from bank to bank. Take out larger sums less often, and when the ATM offers to convert the amount into your home currency, decline and withdraw in lek.

Keep some lek with you. Most fuel stations on main roads take cards, but small stations and parking attendants often want cash in lek.

Day-to-day costs are lower than in most of Western Europe: an espresso is 80 to 150 lek and a restaurant meal 600 to 1,200 lek. Beach sunbeds in high season and imported goods cost more. The everyday prices above show typical costs in your currency.

Not always. Many local rental companies accept a debit card or cash for the deposit, and on Cria you can show only cars that need no deposit.
