Toll roads in Albania

Three sections of Albania's main roads charge a toll. You pay each time you pass, so a return trip pays twice, and the calculator adds them to every route that uses them.

Tolls for a car
Toll section On the way between Per direction
Milot–Morinë (Rruga e Kombit, Kalimash tunnel) Tirana, Durrës or Shkodër and Kukës or Kosovo 660 ALL ≈ 7.27 EUR
Thumanë–Kashar Tirana, Durrës or the south and Shkodër or Kukës 250 ALL ≈ 2.75 EUR
Llogara tunnel (SH8) Vlorë and Himarë or the Riviera 250 ALL ≈ 2.75 EUR
  • Each one can be avoided on an older, slower road without a toll, such as the road over the Llogara Pass instead of the tunnel. The calculator uses the faster toll roads.

How the estimate works

Distances and driving times are for the fastest route inside Albania between the city centres, calculated on OpenStreetMap data. The times leave out stops and traffic, so plan for longer, especially in summer, through towns and on mountain roads.

Fuel is priced at Albania's current pump prices. Consumption depends on the car type and its fuel: a diesel car uses about 15% less fuel than a petrol one, an LPG car about 20% more by volume, and on routes that run mostly on winding roads the estimate adds 35%.

Fuel consumption on main roads, in litres per 100 km
Car type Petrol Diesel LPG
Small car 5.5 4.7 6.6
Compact car 6.0 5.1 7.2
Large car or estate 6.8 5.8 8.2
SUV 7.5 6.4 9.0

Van or minibus 9.5 8.1 11.4

Driving costs in Albania: frequently asked questions

Yes, three. The Rruga e Kombit between Milot and Morinë, through the Kalimash tunnel on the way to Kukës and Kosovo, costs 660 lek per direction for a car. The Thumanë–Kashar road, which links Tirana and Durrës with the road north to Shkodër, costs 250 lek, and the Llogara tunnel on the coast road between Vlorë and Himarë costs 250 lek. Each can be avoided on an older, slower road.

The drive is about 252 km and takes around 4 h 5 min without stops or traffic. A compact diesel car uses about 13 litres, which costs about 2,710 lek (30 EUR) at current prices. There are no tolls on the way, so a return trip costs about twice that in fuel.

Climbs, bends and low gears raise consumption noticeably. The calculator adds 35% on routes that run mostly on winding roads, such as the coast road between Vlorë, Himarë and Sarandë or the mountain road between Korçë and Përmet.

They are the time at the wheel on the fastest route, with no stops and no traffic. With breaks, town centres, summer traffic on the coast and slow lorries on mountain roads, allow 10 to 25% longer.

Albania's current pump prices: 195 lek per litre of petrol, 211 lek per litre of diesel and 70 lek per litre of LPG.
